When the Dixiecrats, Thurmond, Phil Gramm, John Conolly, got out of the democratic party it reduced the internal polarization. No longer did the primaries produce an extreme liberal or right wing candidate. The party, now flexible on issues moved primarily into mainstream issues. Now the Republicans are a coalition of people who forgot the civil war ended a hundred years ago and fanatics who are trying to position themselves for the rapture. The extreme left jumped to the green party. Clinton did essentially govern like a moderate Republican
Clinton governed similar to what a moderate Republican used to be. I would imagine that a democratic successor would be from that same centrist view.
