UMC Shares Rise By Limit as Investors Say Price Is Attractive
By Alan Patterson

Taipei, Oct. 5 (Bloomberg) -- The shares of United Microelectronics Corp., the second-largest maker of chips for brand-name companies, rose as much as their limit in early trade as investors said the share price is attractive.

UMC rose as much as NT$1.6, or 6.8 percent, to NT$25 on the Taiwan stock exchange, after falling to a 12-month low yesterday.

``The stock is very cheap now,'' said John Lin, who counts UMC shares among the NT$10 billion ($289 million) in equities he helps manage for Prudential Securities Investment Trust Co. ``We're buying shares in UMC today.''

Taiwan Hot Stock: UMC Shares On Foreign Buying
TAIPEI (Dow Jones)--Shares in United Microelectronics Corp. (Q.UME) are up by the daily 7% limit at NT$25.0 (US$1=NT$34.551) at 0250 GMT (10:50 p.m. EDT Thursday) on foreign buying, dealers said.
"Actually, buying good stocks during the war is the best strategy," said David Wu, a trader at National Securities, referring to imminent U.S. military action in Afghanistan in retaliation for last month's terrorist attacks.

Foreign institutional investors bought an estimated 44 million shares in United Microelectronics Thursday.

Foreign buying is often seen as major indicator of confidence in Taiwan's retail-dominated stock market.
