SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Sun Microsystems Inc.(Nasdaq:SUNW - news) has won a $100 million deal with News Corp. (NCP.AX) to provide the media giant servers and storage systems over the next two years, the companies said on Tuesday.

The deal outlined to Reuters names Sun as preferred vendor for servers running the Unix (news - web sites) operating system and other products for News Corp. and its global affiliates, including movie studio 20th Century Fox and satellite broadcasters BSkyB in Britain and Sky Mexico.

At least some thing is still happening on the enterprise side. The scope of the deal means IT departs still see the value of updating at regular intervals to maintain a competitive advantage. I wonder hope many other companies are in the same boat. If they all upgrade in preparation for Y2K then they wont need new computers till the end of 2002 as most equipment is obsolete after about 3 years. Is the write off on the capital equipment still 7 years or is it now 3 (30, 30, 40).
