A certificate for the production is likely to be secured by the end of next March. In the initial phase, the company said the production of its 256Mb SDRAM chips would reach 9,000 wafers a month in the second half of 2002. The company stressed there would be no change in its goal of monthly production of 9,000 units for its 12-inch wafer plant, despite the continuous slowdown in the worldwide economy. To shorten the lead-time of securing certificates for its 12-inch wafer plant, ProMos decided to team up with Infineon. On Aug. 23, the company launched its first 12-inch wafer for the production of 256Mb SDRAMs with 0.14-micron manufacturing process. The company said the introduction of a 12-inch wafer plant was an important breakthrough in operations. It will develop a 0.14-micron version 256Mb SDRAM as the first step to upgrade its wafer production to 12-inch technology. After next March, the company will further improve the chip production to the 0.11-micron version of 512Mb SDRAM, to be produced from April 2003. Separately, its 8-inch plant will begin the production of 0.14-micron 256Mb SDRAM in this fourth quarter, and will be transfer to the production of 0.11-micron 256Mb SDRAM in the fourth quarter of 2002. As a result, the production lines of the company's 8-inch and 12-inch wafer plants will together introduce the manufacturing process of 0.14-micron or below in 2002.
