I just posted to you without having seen this post. I'm not knocking comfort. I'm calling cheap balm what it is, in my view. I can't imagine that my remarks about the angel conceit have increased any reader's grief. If they have, I'm both surprised and very sorry. I know that any such opinions make some 'religious' people angry. But that's a different question. I think John Updike's comments trivialized the losses suffered on September 11. Mine in no way did that. (I'm sure you know that.)
