There is little doubt in my mind that by and large most Americans would not agree with the US foreign policy if they knew it. In that sense, the government is in tyrany and is using deceit to keep the people out of it. > like most, I am saddened by some of my country's actions The sad truth is that many Americans who do not agree with what little they know of US conduct outside of its boarders do not take the step to do something about it. This I believe is a contributing factor to the tragic events such as September 11th's. > Your anti-US government slant is coming through. I never hid it. If you go back to my posts, you will see that I said Americans are among the most decent people on Earth. They are free sprited with valor. The American government however is very unamerican, at least when it comes to people who do not pay it taxes. > So we should hold the Afghan people responsible for the murders at the Penatgon and WTC? If in fact the Afghan people had financed the Taliban (in form of taxes or political contributions) and regulated their actions (in form of election and legislation) and if they had stood by without condemning the Taliban, then yes indeed you can blame them for it and hold them responsible. But by and large most Afghans have nothing to do with the Taliban and are its victim. So how can you hold them responsible for the actions of the Taliban? On the other hand, the American public is a direct beneficiary of the US foreign policy (actually I think long term, the foreign policy is not beneficial to the people). Furthermore, the American public has the means and the ability to change the government's conduct. That they do not take their democratic responsiblities seriously, does make them accountable. I am not making a case for terrorist actions within the US. If there is anything everyone should know by now is that violence is not something I support. Rather I am making the case that the people must get involved in the political process and understand what is being done in their name. There is more to democracy than taxes and who slept with whom. regards, ST PS My memory in case of Vincennes is very clear as I fallowed the related news from various sources to the end. I actually saw the medals being awarded on CNN. Rogers' car was booby trapped a few months later. He survived just by dumb luck. That he retired soon after everything cooled down, should tell you something about his suitablity as a commander. There are ways of dicerning the truth through the media. PPS May I suggest a couple of different readings: Manufacturing Consent : The Political Economy of the Mass Media and Rogue States : The Rule of Force in World Affairs by Noam Chumsky are a good place to start.
