"What do you think about the govt. bailing out the airlines?"

Unfortunately it's necessary and may go further.

Amtrak is an example.

A major advantage the US has over the rest of the world is our infrastructure.

FLY SOUTHWEST AIRLINES!

I will sing the praises of Southwest Airlines until the day I die (which is a long way off I hope). It did not surprise me when they said there will be NO LAYOFFS in the wake of the tragedy of September 11. I told friends of mine that I doubted that Southwest would even ask for government assistance with the other airlines (but felt they would benefit from it). Just heard the other day that they will NOT TAKE any of the welfare money from the gov't, and I will bet that they still make a profit this year.

In addition I was happy to hear that Herb Kelleher was chosen to be on the safety commission set up by Norman Mineta in the aftermath of the tragedy.

That said, the bailout is necesary imo BECAUSE THE AIRLINES ARE RUN SO POORLY. Too bad that it was not tied to improving performance or security.
