I am not too crazy about this kind of segmentation. At least Athlon MP, XP and 4 have the same core, they share the same socket, chipset support with Tunderbird line. Any segmentation that breaks these is a bad idea, IMO.

Now it would be a reasonable to have desktop standard size of L2 and a server size. If AMD makes it a prerequisite for adopting Sledgehammer another cost of infrastructure elements, it will be a losing proposition.

On paper, SledgeHammer may be competition for Itanium, high end Xeon, HP, IBM or Sun offerings, but it is a pipe dream that it will end up in those kind of configurations. The immediate goal is to make it to corporate desktop, workstation and low end 2-way servers. AMD should focus all the efforts there.
