EU threatens legal action unless France brings gold trade description in line
Source: AFX
Publication date: 2001-10-04

BRUSSELS (AFX) - The European Commission said it has threatened France with legal action if it does not bring its gold trade description in line with other EU countries.

Under French legislation, only goldwork containing 750 parts per thousand of gold is allowed to be described as gold, whereas goldwork containing 375 or 585 parts per thousand is designated gold alloy.

Most gold imports from other EU countries to France cannot be called gold under the French rule and are only designated as gold alloy, it said.
