John, Re: Consumers equate MHz with speed, it is the best known performance factor

Yes, it's certainly the best know performance factor but IMO it's influence on the buying decision of Joe Average is greatly overestimated. We could probably argue this all day but the fact is that in the end AMD processor sales (and ASPs) will be the best indicator who is right. You hate the new performance rating and think that the customer will be so confused and irritated that he won't buy AMD systems any more. I think he will barely notice and thus processor sales won't be hurt noticeably for AMD. Let's just wait a few months and compare AMD's Q4 sales to Q3 sales and look who is right.

BTW, I find it kind of ironic that AMD's new performance rating is probably part of a new strategy to go for margins instead of market share. Something you suggested some months ago. Just have a look at this story from The Register:

theregister.co.uk

"I am VERY disappointed. Their prices are well over the top - almost exactly same as P4 (PR rating equivalents). On the basis that they dropped their standard Athlon prices too much (Athlon 1.4 = US$112) you can't release a new core (with not a significant improvement) for another $40 more."

Let's see how this plays out...
