CobaltBlue : once a nation has accepted (and fought for) being the cop of the world, it has many responsibilities, above its own strategic interests, and above the issue of ethics which still exist.
Seems to me that the US Gov understood that many decades ago, in many cases, but not all of course.

Now when a cop is himself under attack, how much warning should he give to the assailant ? How much exploration of his philosophy/religion must he do before taking action ? How much should he care if the assailant has many friends watching, commenting, shouting, burning his effigy, unless it is in his own interest to wait before his own next moves without being distracted by his own inner demons of having too many means compared to the weak. ( and in this case, he doesn't have that many.)

Ethics are not the issue here, as the assaliant relatives wave ethnicity issues to try to chase the cop away, and preserve their right/possibility to continue.

The future of both the Muslim civilization and the American way of life will be much more the issue, here. But in the good cop and many democracies interest, it is not fit to discuss this matter at this early stage.
