You are truly free not when you never do what you are told, but when you can choose whether or not to do what you were told. A truly sovereign country enters, from time to time, into treaties and alliances that reduce some of her sovereignty in exchange for something. Buschamann is proposing to surrender some of that sovereignty in exchange for human rights and the rule of law. That is not a betrayals of one's country. That is holding your country to a higher standard.
