Not sure if this is what you are looking for....but the Chicago Tribune has an interview with Tony Kushner who has a play coming out called "Homebody/Kabul". It was written prior to September 11th.

Currently, the most prominent contemporary artists from this part of the globe are two women. Shirin Neshat - Iran and Shazia Sikander - Pakistan. Not Afghani, but close. Do a name search on google you will find more info.
