Where did you ever get the idea the military can foresee, and forestall all attacks. The military is there to respond to any attacks. Harry, if I were to say the sky is blue, would you disagree just to have an argument? It will break the bank<<<<<<< Not necessarily. It also cost a large sum of money to keep 7000 warheads in useable condition. the nuclear material has to be upgraded occasionally to compensate for normal depletion. If one can eliminate half or 2/3 of the current arsenal, the savings would be substantial. There is no way that anyone will agree to reduce the number of missiles we have at our disposal. My God, Harry, they would put up a metal fortress around this country right now if it were feasible. Trust me, any bolstering of internal security will be on top of our regular military budget and then you want to add starwars on top of that? Not to mention, of course, that we've set aside $40 billion to help the airlines and NYC recover. But that isn't enough, so Bush wants another $35 billion on top of that to stimulate the economy; that's in addition to the tax cuts approved earlier this year. I know the gov't can mint money but this is getting ridiculous...and of course, no one can object, or you will be deemed unAmerican.....so all of Congress is goose stepping in place . What a crock! We got attacked, not destroyed! Also, it would eliminate the small rogue country (most Islamic countries) or terrorist, attack by missiles because they would not have the know how to defeat a advanced system. Yes SDI won't eliminate all or even most ways of attacking the Us. But it can eliminate one way, which' with improved missiles coming on line every day, might be within Bin Ladens grasp within 10 - 20 yrs. Or to put it another way, you can beef up airport security all you want, you still won't be able to stop a missile attack, or vice versa. Both should be upgraded. Besides, while you are pinching pennies, how much did the attack on the WTC cost us; and that was peanuts compared to a nuke attack. My opinion is is that we can't afford it...not right now....and there is nada that anyone can say to convince me otherwise. This weekend I am writing a letter to my Congressional reps. and letting them know that I don't like this wanton spending. Its time to get over the hysteria and fear pervading this country. ted
