well low prices for consumers is one advantage to shipping jobs overseas and making it easy for countries to export their cheap goods by exploiting labor, the environment, and standards of living.

but there is a price to be paid.

look at what our economy has become. we used to be the industrial & manufacturing envy of the world. now we are a low-wage service economy that is two-thirds driven by consumer spending. our economy does not thrive on our manufacturing expertise, it thrives on people digging themselves deeper into debt so they can wantonly consume. it depends on a flood of cheap imports to keep prices low--because wages have been falling for years. it has caused a record trade deficit of $370 billion last year, and it has caused americans to be dependant on a rising dollar and foreigners to lend us increasing amounts of money. it has caused an economy where we can't talk tough on trade with japan because they hold so much of our debt instruments. it has caused many of our largest companies to pack up and move overseas, and now they will transfer our technology secrets in order to secure an order. they will layoff thousands of men and women because they can hire some mexican to do the work for 1/10 of the cost. they can produce their products in a foreign country where they can plunder the environment and not have to answer for it. it has caused our politicians to pander to foreign interests in the name of securing election funds. we'll give you favorable trade terms if you give us campaign contributions.

i could go on and on but i have a baseball game to watch...
