Well, I'm rollin again after about 5 hours of installing and configuring stuff. It actually went well tonight after I stumbled onto the setup.txt file on the Windows CD. Damn thoughful of them to stick it on the CD to tell you what to do if you can't install the CD. Anyway, since I'd never had any trouble installing from the CD before I didn't know about the little trick of installing from the HDD. This went perfectly. Only a bunch of sacred little utilities to go and it'll be like new. The upside of having to do this is the machine's running better than before because it's a lot cleaner now. Like you, the accumulated junk in my registry and systray takes it's toll and significant housecleaning is always easy to put off. Anyway, I'll certainly be taking Wily's advice about a second cloned HD.
