burn2learn, The days of lower reliability from AMD chips are gone. These days I have more lockups on my DELL 1.5 GHz P4 at work than I have on my overclocked Athlon 1460 at home. Both running Windows 2000.

The DELL crashes in Netscape a lot more often and seems to have trouble with Direct CD.

Your point about stability is important but I see no evidence that Athlon systems are less stable then P4 systems.
Your other point about perception of reliability is perhaps more relevant. I think the percieved difference in reliability has gone down but many people still look at Intel systems as being more stable.

The other factor is Dell probably has the best reputation for stability and support (deserved or not) and Dell doesn't use AMD chips.
