Dan, Re: "The same issues that motivate Intel to support Linux, motivate Microsoft to support AMD."

Well, that's one thing that I agree with. Intel supports Linux simply because it is another platform that a share of their market prefers. Ignoring this market is ignoring perhaps a significant portion of sales. Microsoft supports AMD for the same reason.

Of course, you extend this to mean that Microsoft would go out of its way to help AMD, such as marketing campaigns that would clearly benefit AMD more than they would Microsoft. Intel certainly wouldn't promote Unix over Microsoft, and here is where the analogy makes more sense.

As market leaders, Microsoft's gain is Intel's gain, and vice-versa. Microsoft doesn't care any more for AMD than to support yet some more conceivable market share. Why do you think Microsoft ported Office to the Mac? Because Bill felt sorry for Steve, and decided to give him a helping hand?

There's a difference. Linux has enabled a new market for Intel. What new market is AMD enabling for Microsoft?
