World War II is a shining example. Both Germany and Japan were turned from mortal enemies to friends and allies in an amazingly short period of time. Rather than by "deprograming," I think this was accomplished simply by example. Our nation had every reason to be filled with vengeance and hate toward our vanquished enemies. We might have acted as victors always did before, and plundered these beaten countries for all they were worth. Instead, we acted in the best tradition of "with malice toward none, with charity for all." Our sole focus was on restoring these nations, and their people, to their proper place in a world at peace. I don't think we need to contrive any propaganda. Our nation's history as a beacon of light and hope in the world community speaks for itself. As human beings, we have made our share of mistakes in earlier times and contexts. Wherever possible, we have sought as a people to redress what we later perceived as injustices. The good we have done far outweighs the bad. So far we have acted with amazing restraint given the magnitude of the attack upon our country. There are people and groups who need to be brought to justice, and blood is going to be spilled, and rightfully so. However, I think we can see now that there is also going to be a renewed effort to give aid and relief to the innocent people of the very countries that harbored the terrorists, once again in our best tradition. It would be nice to think that somehow the truth about America will eventually penetrate these closed societies. They don't want us as friends, but in a way they are lucky to have chosen us as their enemy. JC
