This short covering rally is stunning ... FFIV up 2 points today. ISSX -- I spotted it heading higher around $9, but didn't buy it.

Chiquita settles bribery case

New York, Oct 04, 2001 (EFE via COMTEX) -- The U.S. firm Chiquita Brands
International reached an out-of-court settlement with the U.S. government in a
1996 case revolving around payments the company made to a Colombian customs
official.

The company agreed to pay $100,000, while neither admitting nor denying that it
had committed any illegal acts.

Chiquita had paid a Colombian Customs agent $30,000 to renew a product-storage
license the company held in Colombia, the U.S. Securities and Exchange
Commission (SEC) alleged.

Chiquita's Colombian affiliate, Medellin-based Banadex, knew in September 1995
that the license's renewal was in jeopardy, the SEC added.

By law, Chiquita is forbidden from making payments to Customs agents and must
record all payments made to other government officials.

The charges, nonetheless, maintain that Banadex employees did not comply with
these instructions and that the payment to the Customs agent only came to light
in 1997, when the company carried out an internal audit. EFE
