It was terror. Even in the New Yorker, everywhere, I read about horrible mutilation of whole families, raping and murder of leftist nuns, it was terrible in central america and much of that terror originated from people that were trained by the CIA. You call it a soviet threat, but why can only America have a revolution. Many countries like nicaragua, El Salvador had guys entrenched in powerful positions that were oppressing the people badly. America stood up to its oppressors more than 200 years ago. Those people were doing the same thing.
