Zeev,
The truth of the matter is that the Israelis have knocked themselves out trying to share the wealth with the Palestinaians. It's done for both humanistic and realistic reasons. A thriving Arab democracy/economic system is not acceptable to the fundamentalists or the authoritarians who rule Palestine today. They have done everything in their power to keep misery alive in the region for that is where their power flows from. Almost everywhere else in the world this is not the case any more.
I remember when Rabin was alive and Oslo was first agreed to, the scenes of palestinians giving flowers to Israeli soldiers. Thats how close we came back then. Perhaps it was Rabin's magic that has turned out to be the biggest loss of all. Barak was too small, Sharon too mean and Arafat too cynical to make peace happen. mike
