$$ NEWS $$ Coeur's Bolivian Subsidiary Awarded U.S. Trade and
Development Agency Grant to Commence Final
Feasibility Study At San Bartolome Silver Project

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 17, 2001--Coeur d'Alene Mines
Corporation (NYSE: CDE - news) is pleased to announce that its wholly owned Bolivian
subsidiary, Empresa Minera Manquiri S.A. (``EMMSA'') has been awarded a grant by the U.S.
Trade and Development Agency (``TDA'') to complete a final feasibility study at its San
Bartolome silver project near Potosi, Bolivia.

Having completed a third party review of EMMSA's application, TDA has agreed to fund up to
43 percent (approximately $760,000) of the estimated $1.77 million cost of the study. TDA
funding will be formalized with a grant signing ceremony to be held at the U.S. Embassy in
Bolivia.

In its pre-feasibility study completed in December 2000, Coeur confirmed San Bartolome as a
technically feasible and economically attractive silver mining project based on the following:

A capital investment of $60-$70 million.
Production of six million ounces of silver annually for a minimum of eight years.
Estimated operating cash costs of $3.50 per ounce.
An average life-of-mine silver price of $5.00 per ounce.

Coeur expects that the feasibility study, which should be completed in the first quarter of 2002,
will incorporate a number of optimization opportunities that were identified during the
pre-feasibility stage.
