Not true. An individual, non-union worker can do little or nothing if the parent company decides it wants to "reconfigure" the pension plan to boost the bottom line or change said plan from a defined benefits plan to a cash-balance plan.

A stong union local, however, can prevent such from happening.

Been there. Done it.

Besides strength in numbers for the brotherhood/sisterhood, there also is the assurance that federal law kicks in when this or that happens.

In a perfect world, there would be no need for unions. Unfortunately, we don't live in a perfect world.
