The primary purpose of the Critique of Pure Reason is to show how synthetic a priori propositions are possible. The answer: because we do the synthesizing of experience according to the logical categories in the productive imagination. This is a buttress of the presuppositions of Newtonian mechanics against skeptical attack, particularly from Hume. The secondary purpose is to show where knowledge leaves off, and rational belief begins. For example, in our Newtonian universe, everything must have an antecedent cause, but it is possible among noumena that a rational being can be self- moving, and therefore have free will. That is the point in mentioning a lot of it. As for hypothetical and categorical, those are relevant analytical distinctions between practical injunctions and duties.

I doubt that we are doomed either, nor do I think that Kant thought so. I was merely responding to your friends extrapolation. However, there has to be a place for forgiveness in any such scheme, so that merit is not the only word on the matter......
