They either have to announce then, or want to. If it is good news, they may want to. If it is bad news, they may have to due to new disclosure rules.

Another possibility is news that they are afraid will leak during the weekend; m&a, loss of executive, layoffs that have already happened.

I'm leaning to bad news that they want a chance to spin. They saw that some co.s, like NT, got away with bad news with a positive spin.

a warning before the opening bell would be stupid.

I think this is very very strange - it must be good news in terms of having some visibility. - Why would Scott want the whole world watching, just as U.S. markets open, to post more bad news (and during a quiet period - or maybe it isn't)?
