Cellphone users top 5 million in Shanghai (4 October 2001) If you plan to live in Shanghai, you may need a cellphone to fit in. By Sept. 20, the number of Shanghai Mobile Communications' cellphone subscribers had exceeded 4 million. If China Unicom Ltd.’s subscribers are included, the total number of cellphone subscribers in Shanghai is over 5 million, ranking first among major Chinese cities, the Sept. 21 Xinhuashe (Xinhua News Agency) reported. By March, the number of Shanghai Mobile Communications' cellphone subscribers had topped 3 million. In less than seven months, the figure had grown by an additional 1 million subscribers. Moreover, by the end of the year, it is estimated the figure could reach 9 million. Currently, Shanghai gains one new cellphone subscriber every 2.5 minutes, and is growing 85 percent a year.
