I'm not aware that the government pays the airlines anything when it snows. They've swallowed weather related losses for years.

The fact that jets aren't flying has caused demand for crude to nosedive. We are all gaining from the airlines' woes. Three and a half weeks ago, gas in our area was 1.89 a gallon. Today I paid 1.44. Lack of demand for jet fuel has contributed greatly here. The Arabs had scheduled a September cut in oil production. With lower demand, some are selling more oil to make up the difference and so the curbs are unlikely to materialize for awhile.

We can afford to help a little.
