OFTA further reduce PNETS charges
2001/09/29 13:17

(Infocast News) The Office of the Telecommunications Authority (OFTA) announced a further reduction in PNETS charge for Internet users, from the current 2.3 cents per minute to 2.0 cents per minute, representing a 13% reduction. At the same time, interconnection charges between the mobile phone networks and the fixed telephone network of Pacific Century CyberWorks HKT will also be reduced, from 5.1 cents per minute to 4.8 cents per minute, representing a 6% reduction.

The new charges become effective from October 1 (next Monday).

Anthony Wong, Director-General of Telecommunications, said that Hong Kong's access charge for Internet will stand at $1.2 per hour after this revision. This is among the lowest in the world. These cost based charges are to compensate the network provider for usage of network resources. Without such charges, ordinary telephone users will cross-subsidize Internet users who tend to stay connected for longer periods of time.
