As for the reason Nextel chose to go with iDEN could be because of their deteriorating balance sheet, but even if Nextel went with CDMA, there balance sheet would still suck.

I think his point is that Nextel did not have the financial means to take on the cost of the 1X buildout. Nor, given their balance sheet could they raise the funds needed.

I assume that a switch to 1X would be more expensive than sticking with iDen. Guess McCaw (sic) or Nextel Partners wouldn't (couldn't?) come up with any additional funds to pull off the switch.
