Beyond the obvious purpose of provoking outrage and anger, what is the purpose in saying this? Hyperbole does not breed discussions of reason.

I completely agree.

It is indeed hyperbole, a stretching of reality. However, you must admit that Sharon is the one who turned reality on its head. Clearly, Israel is the nation that has ousted a racial minority, put them into camps, and besieged them. And, clearly, it is Israel that is making military incursions (with tanks yesterday, sometimes with fighter jets and attack helicoptors) into Palestine. And clearly it is Palestine that is destroyed as the world stands by making an occasional sympathetic remark.
