Well October 19 this year is similar to Oct 19, 1987 so may be that is the only correlation

not necessarily. we have already had two collapses right into expirations this year, egged on by delta hedging activities. basically, IF we drop into Oct.22, then the unwinding of the hedges in the following week will produce a big rally, just as the one we've had now. if Oct. 22 turns into a high, the unwinding will lead to a sell-off thereafter. seasonally however, the period from the 22nd to Nov. 5 is the auto-pilot money disposition period, so from that PoV more likely to be strong than weak.
