"WORST MAY BE YET TO COME"

"Some of the polling for the latest jobs report took place after Sept. 11. But based on the methodology of the survey, many people who lost jobs immediately after the attacks would still have been counted as being on the payrolls if they worked at least one day during the Sept. 12 reference week."

"It is likely that the events of Sept. 11 had little effect on the September employment and unemployment figures," Katharine Abraham, Commissioner of the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics, said in a statement. "Job loss related directly or indirectly the events of Sept. 11 should begin to be reflected in the October data."
