scott - that's not a long term bad move, but I very much doubt that DELL would do it. They "got back to basics" at exactly the right time - shedding the sections of the business that did not fit the traditional model and instead focusing on doing what they do better than anyone. That is not the best growth strategy, but it has been an absolute winner in a declining market.

Since no one knows how long the current conditions will run, I would assume that DELL will just continue to manage for lowest cost and drive volume market share, and pretty much ignore the high end, or go after limited segments a la the deal with EMC. Why would they change? They are almost the only ones who can sustain the current conditions indefinitely.
