There may be one advantage to going into Afghanistan directly. None of the surrounding countries inspire confidence as a safe base for American operations. Particularly the obvious candidate, Pakistan. Uzbekistan, who knows, but that seems like taking a substantial chance too. It might be easier to establish secure operations directly in Afghanistan than to rely on the good graces of its neighbors.

Relying on some random collection of the ragtag opposition to put together a government in Afghanistan is also problematic. Not exactly a tried and true approach, in that particular context.
