I think the difference is the availability of server chipsets. With high bandwidth DDR chipsets like Plumas and Grand Champion, the Xeon has the better platform for server related tasks. But with only the i860 available, Xeon makes more sense as a Workstation CPU.

Either way, since they are one in the same, neither was cancelled. Xeon 2GHz launched last week.
