That was a great movie for sure. One thing I often think about when surveying the random wreckage in the less habitable regions of the world is what an amazing operation the British Empire was. If it could have somehow been held together into the modern age, hundreds of millions of people probably would be much better off today, and the main losers would likely be people who dearly deserve to lose.

But the end result of Lawrence's little corner of the great game had its problematic aspects too. The idea of restoring an ancient monarch in Afghanistan doesn't entirely inspire confidence, either.

Nation building is tough, however you go about it. But trying to do it on the cheap can lead to other problems. At least that's my personal reading of the last 25 years or so of history in Afghanistan.
