And that, too, is the rub. Frequently, all too frequently, the term "extraordinary non-recurring item" is expanded to include things that are really recurring and usual. In the case of Qualcomm, however, by the time the next recession happens (after the current one, that is), Qualcomm's only business will be to build (and defend) patents. Not chips. Not satellites. Not cellphone service in Brazil and Australia. Just patents. Which implies no writeoffs in the next recession.
