I see it as really really smart. Israel's Sharon is giving President Bush lots of room in the propaganda war to distance America from Israel and this blunts Arab criticism.
It's all just words like with the Chinese that saw Americans come home and the Chinese look like fools.

I love disinformation.

It's also apparent to SOME that it may free Israel to get "drastic" on the territories. US pressure is only effective as long as US support outweighs the potential benefits of drastic action. When US support is outweighed by those benefits, Israel will act in spite of any potential international condemnation. Israel has done so in the past, as with the British and French, before the US was the patron of the day. This is a dangerous balancing act.
