I stated earlier that I truly hope and believe the United States intends to divide and conquer these individuals groups and states who have targeted the innocent one by one, using all stratagems of disinformation and seeming diplomacy at its disposal. The recent statements, seeming to retreat from the original and proper declaration that all states and governments supporting terrorism are legitimate targets of war, that this war is now not a conventional one, are gravely mistaken and flawed, if they are a true indication of present United States policy. They are dangerous to a degree the nation has not witnessed in decades, and our enemies view them as extreme weakness and paralysis, the degenerate response of a spoiled, decadent nation on the decline. Nothing is more dangerous than this.

this certainly gives me great pause. Nice post CMC.

The logic re: Czechoslovakia goes thus:

Hitler wanted Czechoslovakia to give Germany the Sudetenland. (Lots of ethnic Germans lived in the Sudetenland.)
He threatened to precipitate World War II if Czechoslovakia did not give Germany the Sudetenland.
England was acting as mediator.
Hitler persuaded Neville Chamberlain that he would not start World War II if only Czechoslovakia gave Germany the Sudetenland.
The British pressured Czechoslovakia to concede.
This was the basis of the famous (infamous) Chamberlain speech that they had thereby achieved "peace in their time."
Hitler then proceeded to start WWII anyway.

If there is anyone who doesn't think that Hitler would have started WWII anyway, I have a bridge to sell you.

Appeasement did not start WWII, although I suppose it made Hitler bolder. But the Germans had secretly been preparing for WWII since the 1920's. WWII was inevitable. The German generals wanted to wait until Germany was more ready, maybe 1940-1942, but Hitler was impatient, which is why it started in 1939.

I guess what Sharon is saying is that he thinks that war with the Arab world (WWIII) is inevitable, whether it comes today or next year or three years down the road.

I couldn't agree more, CMC, and nicely put. I blame Colin "Clueless" Powell for all the mushmouth stuff. The Bush administration does NOT need to degenerate into a policy fight between Defense and State right now, but that is always the risk when the President is undecided or inexperienced.

Nor does the U.S. need to display more 'niceness' or 'understanding'. We need a sustained military effort, crowned by a victory. Then our diplomatic relationships in the Muslim world will improve markedly and we will have lots of allies.

I think Sharon, who is usually very adroit in interviews (he says what he means to say and does not say what he does not mean to say), was simply speaking out of outrage.

Powell has obviously been twisting his arm to negotiate under fire, on the very days when Israelis have died in three separate terror attacks, not to mention the dubious loss of the jet. And not only does Powell decide to pressure Sharon, but goes off and rewards Arafat with the "Palestinian state" remarks. And for what? to kiss up to Arab regimes who so far have not even allowed us to use their air bases against Islamic terrorists, even though they themselves are bin Laden's number one targets!
