**OT Forced Conversions ***

Tito, You and Jacob are correct when Christianity is viewed through the Spanish model...The Spanish model was this..
1) The soldiers went in an conquered
2) The religious orders converted the conquered.
3) The government officials took over and made sure that the plunder was sent to back to Spain.

Then there was the French Model

1) Send the missionaries out first to establish a foothold in the new world. (Canada and Northern US, and Southern Louisiana)
2) Use French troops sparingly, and only go after the best prospected areas.

Then there was the Portuguese Model (used in Africa)
1) Covert to Christianity (by bribes) some particular African Tribe.
2) Have the converted tribe declare war on a neighboring tribe.
3) Help the converted tribe defeat the neighboring tribe and then sell the defeated tribe off into slavery. Since the defeated tribes were heathens they could be sold as slaves.

Then there was the British model

1) Capture the most prosperous areas
2) Ignore the religion part
3) Tax the hell out of them and send the money back to England

For my part I will have to read more on the Moslem Expansions. My understanding of the matter is incomplete. I believe that a lot depends on what time period and what geographic area is being considered.

Looks like a good week end project......Jerome

Freedom of religion is one of our most cherished principles. Note that it is the first thing mentioned in the Bill of Rights.
