The difference is Software is HERE for HAMMER and NOT for ITANIC. It will take many more years for software to come out, but by then it may not be necessary.

IBM's new chip blows Itanic away.

"Intel's Merced didn't started in 1994 with first silicon in 1999 - also 5 years."

A couple of things. While first silicon for Itanium was in 1999, the volume production (such as it is) wasn't until 2001. First silicon for the Hammers was likely early this year, with full production in 2003. So we are looking at 3 and 5 years (Hammer/Itanium) for first silicon and 5 and 7 years until full production.

Thanks for playing!

Yes, and it is the "2003 or so" comment that should get everyone banking on it to sit and think a bit.
