I will get to that article later, E. I only have about 5 minutes here, and must rush off.

I think it is appropriate and natural that people think about their environment and make assessments on a continuous basis. Clothing, race, etc. may all be indications of a safety risk. Until I read the article I will leave it at that. I don't know why taking stock of people and situations should require any special labelling such as "profiling", but I will have a look at it later.

At this point, closer scrutiny of Arabs who are boarding planes, not to mention taking crop-dusting or piloting lessons, scrutiny that can be done courteously if not without inconvenience, is necessary.

Scutiny not harassment is the key. There is a difference between keeping a close watch on someone or maybe selecting them for a closer luggage search or interview, and beating them or doing a body cavity search without strong probably cause.

My opinion about whether drugs should be legalized changes between lunch and dinner and again before breakfast. I wouldn't mind seeing what others here think.

I am for legalizing drugs both for libertarian reasons and because I think the war on drugs has failed and in it failure made things worse. However I still have some difficulty getting really enthusiastic about the idea. I can't see myself leading a loud protest for the cause.

My PM correspondent feels that whites are as likely as blacks to be transporting drugs.

Whites are as likely or as many whites transport drugs?
The distinction is important within this context as if the same number of whites transport drugs then blacks would be far more likely to transport drugs as they are less then 1/7th of the population. If on the other hand whites are just as likely to transport drugs then any justification for racial profiling in this area goes right out the window.

From National Review 8/20/2001 - "The Week" -

"Cincinnati has just completed a concentrated experiment in liberal policing" An April riot was explained away as legitimate black anger against the cops; city officials made it clear that they consider the police force to be racist; the cops backed off aggressive policing practices in black neighborhoods; crime skyrocketed, with a sixfold increase in shooting victims, all but one of them black. Call it the Sharpton plan: less "racial profiling," more black corpses.
