I think it also shows the futility of thinking the US can protect itself from terrorism with the vigor that Israel does, simply on the basis of population to land mass. How much harder would it be for the US to really mount a concerted protective effort on its infrastructure.

In the North it's just not that hard to get a bit of explosives, and how is it realistic to suppose the entire length of any of a number of pipelines can be guarded from attack?

This is a terribly difficult issue, and goes right to the heart of how we in NA live and what limitations we're prepared to place on that way of life, what sacrifices we'll make. In an objective sense, this is a cost/benefit analysis, though of course one with terrible implications regardless of the decision we make.

It is, without a doubt, true that our lives have been changed by September 11. I only hope not so dramatically that pre-Sept 11 is the stuff of old-folks stories to our children about the good old days.
