Chocolate Maker Facing Social Pressure For Segregating White And Dark Chocolates

YPRES, BELGIUM-- In the twenty-first century, one would like to believe that colonial attitudes and racial emnity have been eliminated, but retail outlets for The Chocolate Shoppe are still separating the white chocolates from the dark ones.

"I really don't understand it what the fuss is about," said Emile Poitier, chocolatier and owner. "Traditionally the whites are kept seperate. The dark chocolate and milk chocolate can be mixed together, for a pleasing texture, but they should be kept some distance from the whites."

It is this seperation that has ERAC (Equal Rights for All Chocolates) up in arms.

"All chocolates should be free to mingle with each other, to rub shoulders with their brothers and sisters, whatever their filling, whatever their colour," said Ryan Gibbs, a protester outside the store in Ypres. "After all, the colour is only coating thick."

Ryan sees a more sinister plot in the chocolate arrangements.

"You'll notice that the white chocolates are on the right, and the 'coloureds', if you'll excuse the expression, are on the left," he said. This is obviously a classic Bourgeois split between the capitalist reactionaries and the proletariat. Chocolates, cast off your chains!"

ERAC has been protesting the three Chocolate Shoppe locations for several weeks. They have been waving signs and handing out leaflets. Their solution calls for a series of one-colour chocolate shops, each one defined by the chocolate colour. "The ideal solution, and one we heartily endorse," said Ryan, "is for all chocolates to be freely mixed. Unfortunately, our society is not enlightened enough to accept such a radical solution immediately. We must instead initiate a series of five-year plans to re-educate the public, and the chocolates themselves, about the equality of all flavours."

"Part of the interim solution will be to allow the different colours to express and find themselves by being their own exclusive colour in their own shop. This way they can develop their self-esteem at their own pace without the inevitable pressures of comparison to other types. Eventually the seperate shops will wither away, leaving a chocolate-lover's utopia where every confection is equal."

However, ERAC is seen as taking the wrong direction by some.

"Their problem is that they see the issue only in dark and white," said Giles Eventide, a spokesperson for IWITC (It's What's Inside That Counts), another organization dedicated to the elimination of discrimination among chocolate.

"Any fool can talk about some unachievable dream paradise, but where's the plan of action? The reality is that as soon as someone bites into a coconut cluster, if they don't like coconut, they're not going to like it, no matter what colour the chocolate on the outside is. That's why the only real solution to this problem is strict segregation of all chocolates into discrete content packages. No more variety packs. No more surprises. The chocolate should cover only half the candy, and each one should be clearly labelled. We want strict chocolate purity laws established, for everyone's protection."

IWITC has been boycotting ERAC's protest outside The Chocolate Shoppe's stores. In one incident toffee was thrown along with insults.

The Chocolate Shoppe's owners remain perplexed. "The white chocolates aren't even chocolate," said Emile, "they're made of cream."
