While Intel processors have been lashed together in high volume to approach the capabilities of machines based on more capable processors, the number of instances is relatively small.

Not only small, but in some sense tried and failed ... remember Sequent?

There are some individual instances of massively parallel supercomputers using Intel, but that is really a whole different kettle of fish than a large internet server.
