Another datapoint....it seems like churn is going down for US carriers. Verizon reported churn on Thursday of 2.2% which is down from 2.3% last quarter and 2.5% YoY.

biz.yahoo.com

Demand for wireless services in the quarter was solid, as the company continued to focus on the quality of its subscriber base. Contract gross additions accounted for more than 86 percent of total gross additions. Total churn was down from the third quarter 2000 and for the second consecutive quarter, decreasing to 2.2 percent.

If this is an industry-wide trend it is going to result in slightly lower handset sales in the US. I believe that PCS has been seeing a similair drop in churn so I think we might be seeing a trend and not an aberration.

The postive aspect of this will be that it will result in carriers which are much more financially healthy. A drop in churn impacts the bottom-line immediately.

mm- I thought we all thought that Q had a bit of a unique place in commercial history. I have to assume that wireless data is going to be a big and grwoing part of the Worlds ecnomy for the next decade at least.

Q happens to have a lock on the required fundamental technology. It happens from time to time that companies can find themselves in this unique position and when they do they are entitled to a somewhat larger P/E to reflect this position.

Maybe I am peculiar but I see Q ASICS in several everyday devices I don't want to bore everyone with the usual list but I will say that it isn't some very useful product that I won't be invoilved in, No it is products that I will be involved in and every day and indeed several times per day and I for one Can Not Wait to get my hands on a wireless laptop and a wireless PDA/phone/video-camera and to have a similar type of gadget in-car. Can't wait.

Best,

L
