>>That Ruskin's enemy would be reading economics is no surprise. Ruskin's own attorney believed that the cartoon was simply giving graphic form to "Mr. Ruskin's well known antipathy to political economy." But why is the enemy, with his ape-like face, sharp pointed teeth and tail, so obviously a caricature of an African? What do Africans have to do with Adam Smith and "The Dismal Science"?<<

Wow! What a great article.

What's wrong with the free market? Well, to begin with, it treats all human beings as equals. What could be more radical? What could be more destructive to traditional societies with their stultifying caste systems?

Women? Equal.
Men? Equal.
Christians? Equal.
Jews? Equal.
Muslims? Equal.
Ariel Sharon? Equal.
Yasser Arafat? Equal.
George W. Bush? Equal.
Saddam Hussein? Equal.
Osama bin Laden? Equal.

Doesn't get much more radical than that, does it?

Disclaimer: Don and I have a long-standing discussion going about economics - he and I are both free market types, although he's into Austrian economics and I am a fan of Adam Smith and John Stuart Mill.
