I wonder how effective President Bush's plan to delay the attack (http://www.rediff.com/us/2001/oct/06ny16.htm) is going to be.

I agree with you that the restraint is remarkable and will win him a lot of accolade from the civilised world. Esp as no aspirin factories and baby milk plants have been bombed to appease the American public. However, Afghan winters are terrible. And a large part of an effective and successful strategy is teh timing of the attack <remember WW 2 and the German vs Russians ?>. While the Talebans dig deep into their burrows after stockpiling their supplies, US will be left on the ground and in the air, trying to fight a war in a terrain which anyway is quite difficult, even without the abominable weather and the snow. The winter sets in early in the hilly regions bordering the himalayas. Life almost comes to a standstill in the region in and around Afghanistan.

It is my belief that any air strike and very esp the ground war in the period between November thru April will be more of a liability for US.
