Really the M-1 Garand(30-06) is far more accurate than the 7.62X39(the normal Chi-com cartridge found most often in Nam) with far greater knockdown. Sure, I own an SKS but two 30-06's. Even though the SKS shoots "well" out to 200yds even the old WW-I vintage ultra-mass produced Springfield will produce far better accuracy at 200-250 and produce "acceptable results" all the way to 500 yds. The Springfield pales when compared to the mid 70's tuned Remingotn 700 BDL heavy barrell also in -06 but it fell from the box printing better groups than 80% of the military rifles in the world & also better than most "hunting rifles".
